District 158 Board Wants to Eliminate Teachers' Right to Strike

Right on, District 158! Bongo couldn't agree with you more!

Today's top Northwest Herald headline screams: "D-158 Aims to End Strikes".

Here's the story.

While Bongo loves teachers, he has always had a hard time with teachers who use the ability to strike as a mechanism to obtain large raises. Teachers who favor striking feed into the negative opinion that some humans have that teachers aren't really in it for the kids, but rather only for the money.

Remember the strike in Cary District 26 a few years ago? The devastation that strike caused in that community still exists today. The minute teachers strike, all trust a community has in its school system is shattered. Remember how after the Cary strike, board members were voted out of office for allowing the strike to occur? More realistically, they were voted out of office because they dug in their heels and refused to give raises that they couldn't afford to give, which caused working parents to scramble to find day care until the strike ended.

Board President Shawn Green said it very well in the article:

"...the negative effects that it causes the school district itself, the students and the community are irreparable for years and years."

The school board made its stance public when it sent a resolution to the Illinois Association of School Boards. The resolution will be considered and voted on by school board delegates from across the state at the annual conference in November.

If successful, District 158 is asking that IASB to strengthen its stance against teacher strikes and lobby for change.

It will be interesting to watch the blog posts on line. Especially if it appears that teachers are posting during the school day!
