HEA Puts Out Unilateral Press Release

Bongo guesses the HEA figures that if the school district can put out its own unilateral press releases so can they.

The HEA put out a press release on Thursday that blames the lack of progress regarding a new teachers contract on the school district and Larry Snow by name; not on the teachers. In the release they claim their most current proposal (July 14) is affordable and would not require deficit spending or a tax increase. "Budget surpluses will continue," said the release.

District negotiator Tony Quagliano strongly disagreed.

"Based on the current preliminary budget, the information that was provided by the HEA regarding budget surpluses and deficit spending is inaccurate," said Quagliano, a CPA and finance expert.

Unfortunately, the union is not willing to publicly put its money where its mouth is by publishing their numbers that prove their case, so the public is left with this question:

Who ya gonna believe... the district's negotiation team which includes two CPAs, or the union negotiators, which include three elementary teachers and a middle school social studies teacher?

You can read the Daily Herald story here, and you can read the Northwest Herald story here.

On the bright side, both the district and and union are on record as sincerely wanting to have a contract in place prior to the first day of school August 25. It appears, at least for now, that both sides recognize that a strike is the WORST thing that could happen in District 158.

Stay tuned!
