It appears that the contract issue between District 158 and the Huntley Education Association has taken center stage in both the Northwest and Daily Heralds. Both newspapers have given considerable ink to the issue over the last week.
Here are links to stories that have been published over the last several days:
New proposal would still put District 158 in red, officials say (DH 7-22)
D-158 board says it won't touch balance in contract talks (NWH 7-23)
Union accuses District 158 of 'running up surpluses'(DH 7-23)
District 158 teachers union won't release new proposal (DH 7-25)
District 158 says teachers want 30 percent raise in 3 years (DH 7-26)
D-158 wise to be saving (NWH 7-27)
D-158 board: Contract proposal would raise costs 30 percent (NWH 7-28)
If you take the time to read them all, you'll see a common theme. The HEA union leadership team is asking District 158 to dip into its fund balance in order to pay salaries and benefits and the school district's negotiating team is willing to give raises, but will not touch the fund balances, which they say are needed to avoid expensive short term borrowing, allow them to earn valuable interest, and will be in place when a new school or building additions are needed to ease overcrowding and keep teachers' class sizes down.
Bongo can't wait until the contract issue is settled. It would be nice to read about something else for a change.
