District 158 In the News (Again)

When Bongo emBARKed on this little “pet” project, he had no intention of posting every day. But the Northwest Herald has slapped District 158 on the front page or in the “Our View” editorial section pretty much every day this week.

Today’s front page story was about school board member Aileen Seedorf, who sent an e-mail to the head of the teachers union to express her personal thoughts regarding the upcoming contract negotiations and her disappointment with some of the other board members. Last Bongo heard, Seedorf was one of the school district team’s lead negotiators. That means she is one of the people who will represent the school board/district in the negotiations with the teachers. Her job is to relay the thoughts of “the district” and her goal is supposed to be getting the best deal possible for the district and ultimately the taxpayers.

Bongo’s question to Mrs. Seedorf is this: JUST WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON? Because doggies can’t serve two masters. They’re called negotiations for a reason. Bongo thinks that if Seedorf is unable or unwilling to clearly position herself on one side of the bargaining table, she should step down now so that someone who will truly represent the taxpayers can serve with Mr. Green on the district’s negotiating team.

Seedorf compared her personal e-mail to Henderson to President Green’s contact with Henderson where he mentioned the district’s interest in holding the negotiations in public. Is Seedorf suggesting there is no difference between the board president providing information regarding the consensus of the board, and a personal e-mail sent to cozy up to the union and bad mouth fellow board members?

Maybe the majority of the board is on to something here. Maybe the negotiations should be held in public.
