Contract Talks Coming Down to the Wire

Bongo is starting to chew on his claws a bit. Bongo heard from one of his puppy pals that the District and HEA negotiation teams met at 5pm on Sunday night and didn't leave until 2am this morning and things did NOT go well.

District 158 has posted its final offer to the HEA on the D 158 web site (look in the upper right corner of the page) and the teachers will meet to vote on the final offer on Tuesday afternoon. Bongo is happy to hear the final proposal has been posted on the web site so that all humans can see just what is being offered by "the board which refuses to negotiate" (HEA accusation). Remember, the initial proposal was 4.25% for a salary increase in year one, and guaranteed cost of living plus .25% in subsequent contract years. Bongo, for one, intends to chew on the document later today and thoroughly digest its contents.

Bongo would guess that if the HEA rejects the final offer, a vote to strike would follow in short order. Bongo still wonders how much support the teachers would receive if they decided to strike, from taxpayers who have either lost jobs, taken pay cuts, or received no salary increase this year due to the economy.
