D 158 Negotiators Fire Back at HEA Press Release

Calling the HEA budget numbers "totally inaccurate," District 158 negotiators have fired back at claims made by the HEA that their current proposal, which they are so far not willing to share with the general public, could be achieved while still maintaining a budget surplus. The District said the proposal, issued July 14, would necessitate more than $1 mllion in budget cuts elsewhere to avoid deficit spending.

You can read the story here.

Teachers say they stand by their numbers, and suggest that budget reserves created from the 2004 referendum should be used to fund the proposed increases in salaries and benefits.

Perhaps the teachers think it is a good financial practice to spend every dime the district has in the bank. Or perhaps they have forgotten about the board's vote last year to build a 1% surplus into every budget. Bongo would certainly hope that these teachers don't spend every dime they earn. He hopes they all have a savings account for emergencies in their personal lives. How many humans have had to tap their own "budgetary reserves" because they lost their job, had to pay an insurance deductable for hail damage, etc.?

The union is supposed to meet tonight to disucuss whether or not they will relase their latest proposal.

If they truly believe their numbers and have nothing to hide, Bongo would expect the proposal will be released as soon as tomorrow. If the HEA refuses to release their information and how they got their numbers, Bongo would suggest that the HEA doesn't have as much confidence in the accuracy of their numbers as they would like people to believe.

Stay Tuned!!!
